Experience and Opportunity

The objective of the TDS Summer Student Program is to provide law students with experience in the practice of law and an opportunity to get to know the firm’s lawyers and practice areas. Summer Students are usually assigned to four or five lawyers who practice in various areas of the law. Students assist in legal research, drafting documents, and preparations for court proceedings and other hearings. We provide as many opportunities as possible for our Students to accompany lawyers to client meetings, pre-trial proceedings, hearings, and commercial transaction closings.

Our Summer Students are also invited and encouraged to participate in the firm’s in-house education seminars and social functions throughout the summer. Our goal is to ensure that our students are exposed to a variety of areas of law while gaining first-hand experience of what it is like to practice in a full-service law firm in Winnipeg.

Interested students should apply by completing the online application form and attaching their cover letter, resume, undergraduate transcripts, and law school grades to date (if available).

Please note that we are only accepting applications from students who are currently completing their first year of law school in the 2024 – 2025 academic year.

We anticipate that interviews will be conducted the week of February 10th. The anticipated start date is May 5, 2025 and the salary is competitive with other Winnipeg summer student programs. We thank all students who express an interest in our Summer Student Program; however, only those applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.

General Information

Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP has 100+ lawyers and its head office is located in True North Square. TDS is a full-service law firm in Winnipeg with offices across Manitoba and in Saskatchewan. TDS has been ranked and recommended by Chambers Global and Benchmark Litigation and has been recognized as one of the top regional firms in the prairies by Canadian Lawyer Magazine. In addition, several of the firm’s lawyers are consistently recognized by Best Lawyers® in Canada and LEXPERT® as leaders in their respective practice areas.

Our summer student program pairs each of our students with a number of principals in various practice areas. Our students work alongside their principals throughout the summer.

During my very first year as a summer student, one of my principals almost immediately became an important mentor. I recall feeling comfortable asking him questions that at the time, felt a bit silly – about wardrobe, email etiquette, how to talk to a client on the phone for the first time, etc.

Almost 15 years later, that person is still my mentor and friend.

The summer program is great because you’re exposed to a number of different areas of the law while working with the same group of lawyers for the entire summer.

When I summered, I was assigned to four or five different lawyers in several different practice areas. Working with the same people gave me the opportunity to follow files along for a period of time as opposed to simply rotating through practice areas. I found that helped me narrow down the areas of the law that I really liked working in.
