Experience and Opportunity
The objective of the Christianson TDS Summer Student Program is to provide law students with experience in the practice of law and an opportunity to get to know the firm’s lawyers and practice areas including corporate, commercial, municipal, family, criminal, real estate, and more. Students assist in legal research, drafting documents, and preparations for court proceedings and other hearings. We provide as many opportunities as possible for our students to accompany lawyers to client meetings, pre-trial proceedings, hearings, and commercial transaction closings.
Our Summer Students are also invited and encouraged to participate in the firm’s in-house education seminars and social functions throughout the summer. Our goal is to ensure that our students are exposed to a variety of areas of law while gaining first-hand experience of what it is like to practice in a full-service law firm in rural Manitoba.
Interested students should apply by completing the online application form and attaching their cover letter, resume, undergraduate transcripts, and law school grades to date (if available).
We thank all students who express an interest in our Summer Student Program; however, only those applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.
Our Firm
With over 50 years of service, Christianson TDS is a vibrant and dynamic law firm based in Portage la Prairie, with branch offices located across rural Manitoba including Neepawa, Gladstone and MacGregor. We provide high-quality legal services across several areas of law, including litigation, corporate, real estate, family, and criminal law.
Reasons To Choose Rural Manitoba
We believe that working in smaller communities is an excellent opportunity for legal professionals who want to make a difference, to develop strong client relationships, and to create change. Here are some of the reasons why:
- Closer client relationships: In smaller communities, you’ll have the chance to build close relationships with clients and become their trusted advisor. This is a connection with clients that can’t easily be built in larger urban centres.
- Thriving economy: Rural Manitoba is an excellent place to work, with a growing economy and plenty of opportunities to build your practice. You’ll have the chance to make a real impact in the community and be part of something truly special.
- More autonomy: In law firms like ours, you have a greater degree of autonomy and control over your work, including the types of matters you handle, your schedule, and your work style. Rural Manitoba offers a more relaxed environment, giving you the chance to develop your skill set and achieve a better work-life balance in your personal and professional life.
Working at CTDS, first as a summer student, and now as an articling student, has been such a great experience. Not only have I been learning a lot, I have felt welcome, included, and treated as a valued member of the team. The culture of the office has allowed me the flexibility to meet expectations with respect to my level of productivity but also maintain a work life balance. The senior counsel in the office have provided constructive feedback, motivational words, and always have their doors open for questions that I may have. Some great perks to working in a Portage office that may not be known: parking is FREE, the drive from Winnipeg is roughly only 45 minutes with no waiting in traffic (outside the perimeter), and working in a rural office allows you to try your hand at multiple areas of practice. CTDS is a great place to work!

It has been a great environment to develop as a lawyer, with lots of opportunity for hands-on experience in different practice areas. I have always felt valued and supported by a strong team of senior lawyers and assistants. I really enjoy working at CTDS!
